What Jiang Means

In the March 2025 lecture, pilgrims give money to the Templars before traveling and receive it back in Jerusalem. That makes the order, practically, “a bank” and “the first multinational organization in Europe.”
Jerusalem then changes the institution. Because the Templars have to govern a mixed sacred city, Jiang says they work with Jews and Muslims, learn from them, and become more tolerant and cosmopolitanLoading source trail. The key mechanism is not a clean virtue story. It is distance from Rome plus contact with other traditions producing new habits of thought.
The third layer is persecution and underground continuity. Once the Templars become too powerful and too intellectually independent, Church authority turns on them.
