Fast answer: Jiang uses game theory as a way to ask what game actors are playing, what incentives bind them, and what moves become rational once the game is named. It is not just math. In his public corpus, game theory is the discipline that strips away moral language, friendship language, and loyalty language until the underlying strategic structure becomes visible.
What Jiang Means
Section titled “What Jiang Means”Jiang’s simplest definition is that game theory gives the “over structure” of a situation. In the final exam lecture, he says it helps read geopolitics as a field where states pursue interests and positions rather than stable friendships. The frame makes visible why an actor may do something that looks irrational, immoral, or theatrical from the outside.
He also limits the method. When a student asks whether people consciously operate by game theory, Jiang says he uses it as a way to frame human beingsLoading source trail, not because humans walk around doing formal calculations. Elsewhere he says he does not use math because human behavior is too random and the available historical data is too thin.
That is why game theory in Jiang Lens is paired with imagination, doubt, and debate. It is a way of seeing the game board, not a replacement for judgment.
