The Nation Is The New God

Civilization #58: Birth of the Nation-State

The nation-state is not just a map form. It is the most powerful ideology in human history because it solves a religious wound, protects bourgeois property, standardizes social life, mobilizes bodies for war, and turns culture into destiny. In the French version, the nation protects the citizen. In the German version, the nation is the church. The twentieth century is what happens when that church learns race, empire, eugenics, fascist myth, and total war.

The lecture's argument is that nationalism wins because it can do what money, reason, the self, liberalism, and communism cannot do alone: turn isolated individuals into a community willing to sacrifice. The Protestant crisis of faith creates a lonely believer; the Industrial Revolution creates capitalists who need property rights and markets; urbanization creates anomie, alienation, and disenchantment. The nation absorbs all of it. Once one people coordinates, everyone else must coordinate or lose. That is why the decisive measure of national power is not size, wealth, or territory, but unity of will. The same force gives France citizen armies, Germany cultural resurrection, Japan social cohesion, fascism its myth of war, and the Pax Americana its uneasy postwar attempt to replace national struggle with rules, rights, free trade, and consumer happiness.

Faith, Property, Alienation

The nation-state is built from three crises at once: Protestant faith, industrial property, and modern social dislocation.

The religious origin is the Protestant crisis of faith. Once the Church no longer mediates God, the individual stands alone before an impossible demand: never doubt, never rage at God, prove absolute faith. Modernity then offers substitute gods. Money becomes God Source trail 2:34 The Protestant Reformation removes the Catholic Church from the equation. Now you are in direct communion with God and you must show absolute faith if you are to achieve salvation. Okay and so this creates a crisis of f... in capitalism. Reason becomes God in Enlightenment liberalism. The individual becomes God in modernism. The nation wins because it gives the isolated individual a community Lens point nation-god-machine The nation becomes a god-machine when it gives isolated individuals a sacred collective body, converts that body into unity of will, and organizes population, school, welfare, industry, and war around the survival of the national form. And that is this idea that by celebrating your nation you are celebrating your faith in God. Why? Becau... and turns national celebration into religious certainty.

The economic origin is colder. The Industrial Revolution creates industrialists and capitalists who need markets, resources, imperialism, and above all property rights. A king can fall Source trail 8:13 Now, the problem is this. The problem is, the system of the monarchy cannot really ensure property rights. And the reason why is, the king can be overthrown, okay? Their stock is, he can be overthrown. And this is what... . A monarchy can be overturned. The nation-state is harder to overthrow, so it becomes the political form that protects bourgeois wealth across generations while also giving the state the resources and appetite for expansion.

The social origin is bewilderment. Villages empty into cities; trade, print, literacy, goods, people, and ideas move faster; standardization spreads. The result is anomie, alienation, and disenchantment: lost cultural rootedness, lost agency, and a machine-like life Source trail 11:09 And it creates psychological issues. Okay? Cohesion Beats Size

The nation-state spreads as a coordination game, and its strength is unity of will rather than mass.

The spread of nationalism is not treated as persuasion. It is game theory. If millions of individual players are playing and one small group coordinates, everyone else must group together or lose. The moment France becomes a nation-state, Germany, Russia, Italy, and everyone else must answer in the same form. The nation-state is contagious because it changes the rules of survival Lens point game-theory-method In Jiang's game-theory formula, power is not raw size. Mass matters only when joined to energy and coordination, and coordination is the strongest factor because it turns separate actors into a working body. The French version comes through Rousseau and the Revolution. Individuals are born free, surrender some rights for security and possibility, and form a general will. Government exists to serve that will. The French Revolution makes the country into one body Lens point nation-god-machine The nation-state changes the game when it converts scattered individuals into unity of will: a smaller cohesive people can beat a larger loose aggregate because members believe they are defending one body. The German version is born against that French conquest. Romanticism reverses the premise: individuals do not come first; culture comes first Source trail 21:32 troops to make sure that you have to obey okay so this creates a lot of resentment and the people's response was to create their own form of nationalism but in response to French nationalism okay so now they're being in... and gives birth to a people. The nation exists not to protect individual rights, but to protect, enhance, and spread the culture already carried in the people. French nationalism protects the citizen. German nationalism protects the blood-thickened culture.

Standardize The People

The nation-state replaces monarchy by making people, measures, language, and culture legible as one.

Compared with monarchy, the nation-state changes the authority, the elite, and the political appetite. Monarchy rests on bureaucracy, aristocracy, and conservative alliance management. The nation-state rests on people or culture, bourgeois capital, and standardization. Because it is almost a new religion Source trail 25:08 But the nation state... Because it is almost like a new religion. It wants standardization and systematization. It wants everyone to buy into the nation state. And as a result, it's expensive. It's either expensive outw... , it wants everyone to buy in. It expands outward through empire or inward through systematization.

James Scott supplies the administrative version: capitalism, Enlightenment philosophy, and revolutionary enforcement make the metric revolution possible. The state simplifies the world by giving everyone the same measures and the same legal status. Benedict Anderson supplies the imaginative version: print capitalism and language let people think the same way, imagine a shared history, and destroy local linguistic diversity in the name of national language Source trail 27:1828:21 And he explains. What made the new communities imaginable was a half notorious, but explosive interaction between a system of production and productive relations, capitalism, technology of communications, print and the...History, it's all just made up. There's something real in it. Okay? And because of this, it's destroyed linguistic diversity. So if you were to go to France in the year 1800 and you go from village to village, they woul... .

Then the lecture sharpens the French-German split through religion. Source trail 29:2830:24 But the idea of a national language prevents them from doing that. Okay? Does that make sense? Great. All right. Jean -Jacques Rousseau, we talked about. We're just going to read a couple sentences from his book, The So...It's one of the fundamental ideas of the French Republic. And that's why in today, there's so much antagonism between Islamists and the government. Okay? Because Islamists want to maintain their tradition. They want to... Rousseau's republic cannot be Christian in the old sense because republican citizenship and servitude to church authority are mutually exclusive. That becomes the French separation of church and state, and it explains modern French conflict with Islamists over hijab and public custom. French nationalism asks religion to disappear from the civic surface.

German nationalism moves the other way. Napoleon humiliates German intellectuals by dissolving the Holy Roman Empire into French dependency. Arndt answers by making hatred of the French a religion Source trail 32:29 Let the animality of your hearts be your church. Okay? Let us be one people. And let this nation be our religion. Let hatred of the French be your religion. Let freedom and fatherland be your saints, to whom you pray. A... . Fichte answers by making language the vessel of Geist, the spirit of the people. The nation is not a collection of individuals; it is the transformation that breathes life into scattered bones. For the Germans, the nation is the church Source trail 35:30 All right. So main difference between French nationalism and German nationalism. Okay? Separation of church and state. For the Germans, the nation is the church. The French believe in the general will. From Dreyfus To Eugenics

The Jewish question and Darwinian racial theory show the fork between rights-nationalism and cultural-racial nationalism.

The Jewish question is the test. Jews are a nation without a state: Bible, language, culture, history, and a refusal to disappear into someone else's culture. The French answer is the Dreyfus Affair. Alfred Dreyfus is Jewish, falsely accused, and imprisoned, but liberals such as Zola defend him because the Republic exists to protect citizens. If one citizen can be sacrificed by the justice system, every citizen can be Source trail 38:41 And the answer is, it has to do with the French identity. At this point in history, there's this huge conflict between French liberals who see themselves as heirs to the French Revolution and monarchists, who want to ge... .

The German answer, in the lecture's compressed contrast, is the Holocaust. The route there passes through 1848, monarchy's attempt to contain nationalism, and a new philosophy of culture supplied by Darwin. If development happens by chance rather than divine design Source trail 41:18 We are who we are by random chance through the process of evolution. And this theory, this will give birth to the idea of systemic racism. Okay? Because if it's true that God has no say in how we develop, if it's true t... , elites can misread evolution as proof that some peoples evolved to be more intellectual, scientific, brave, and therefore fit to rule.

That mistake becomes skull measurement, systemic racism, and eugenics. Galton turns the gene pool into a national project Source trail 42:2443:31 Right? Because they figured out if they can measure the skull, then they can make generalizations about the different brains of different cultures. And of course, the entire point of this exercise was to prove that, in...Right? The first is you can do forced sterilization. So people who might be handicapped or they are criminals, you sterilize them to prevent them from reproducing. That's one solution. Another solution is, well, executi... . Bad genes must be removed by forced sterilization, execution, or immigration restriction. The United States becomes a center of the movement because WASP elites fear supposedly low-stock Europeans entering the country. Madison Grant's Nordic race theory then travels into Nazi policy.

This is why the 1935 counterfactual matters. Jiang says the likely alliance, from within that racial-political world, was America, Britain, and Germany against the Soviet Union Source trail 45:55 This is what he says. A rigid system of selection through the elimination of those who are weak or unfit would solve the whole question in 100 years, as well as enable us to get rid of the undesirables who crowd up our... : Nordic capitalist peoples against Slavic communism. The actual wartime alliance therefore becomes a puzzle reserved for the next class.

Empire Meets Japan

Imperial racism works in Africa and China, then Japan breaks the model through national cohesion.

The age of imperialism follows the same racial logic. Europeans need resources, but they also think they carry a civilizing mission as the master race. Medicine weakens malaria's barrier, and Africa is carved up. Leopold's Congo becomes one of the lecture's examples of imperial atrocity. China is divided into treaty-port spheres. The Europeans expect submission because their racial model tells them the hierarchy is natural Source trail 48:08 And their imperialism in Africa was notorious, right? It was one of the worst atrocities in human history, especially in the Congo, which was controlled by Belgium. Basically, the king of Belgium, Leopold, had a mercena... .

Japan breaks that expectation. It turns from a feudal society into an industrial nation quickly enough to defeat Russia in 1905. The rapidity is the point: it looks as if an entire people decided to change today Lens point nation-god-machine The nation-state changes the game when it converts scattered individuals into unity of will: a smaller cohesive people can beat a larger loose aggregate because members believe they are defending one body. Myth, War, Open Society

Fascism turns the nation into total myth; the postwar answer tries to replace unity of will with rights, rules, trade, and consumerism.

Okay? Fascism is the belief that the nation, the people is in an eternal struggle of the fittest. Okay? It must d... . For fascism, war is good because it fuses the people into a final struggle and remolds them into more extreme nationalists.

The postwar thinkers answer by defending the individual against total myth. Arendt says totalitarian rule needs people who can no longer distinguish fact from fiction Source trail 58:42 Okay? And what she explains is this. The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated Communists but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false no longer ex... or true from false. Popper's open society asks people to be critical of taboos and use their own intelligence. He rejects Plato, Hegel, and Marx because grand historical endings are anti-democratic, anti-individual, and megalomaniacal.

That answer becomes the intellectual basis for the American Empire. World War II was the nation-state, nationalism, fascism, mercantilist trading zones, and unity of will. Pax Americana offers the rules-based order, the United Nations, human rights, Geneva conventions, global free trade, and consumerism. Instead of becoming an invincible national force, buy things and be happy Source trail 1:02:06 That's what fascism is, the unit of will.
