# The Nation Is The New God

> The nation-state is not just a map form. It is the most powerful ideology in human history because it solves a religious wound, protects bourgeois property, standardizes social life, mobilizes bodies for war, and turns culture into destiny. In the French version, the nation protects the citizen. In the German version, the nation is the church. The twentieth century is what happens when that church learns race, empire, eugenics, fascist myth, and total war.

## Thesis

The lecture's argument is that nationalism wins because it can do what money, reason, the self, liberalism, and communism cannot do alone: turn isolated individuals into a community willing to sacrifice. The Protestant crisis of faith creates a lonely believer; the Industrial Revolution creates capitalists who need property rights and markets; urbanization creates anomie, alienation, and disenchantment. The nation absorbs all of it. Once one people coordinates, everyone else must coordinate or lose. That is why the decisive measure of national power is not size, wealth, or territory, but unity of will. The same force gives France citizen armies, Germany cultural resurrection, Japan social cohesion, fascism its myth of war, and the Pax Americana its uneasy postwar attempt to replace national struggle with rules, rights, free trade, and consumer happiness.

The nation-state begins here as a replacement God. State is only sovereign authority over territory; nation is the more dangerous invention, a people who imagine shared identity through language, culture, history, or ethnicity. That idea can make Jews before Israel or Kurds today into nations without states. Once nation and state fuse, politics becomes faith. The nation answers Protestant loneliness, bourgeois property anxiety, industrial standardization, and mass psychological dislocation. It gives people a body to belong to, a struggle to enter, and a reason to die.

The religious origin is the Protestant crisis of faith. Once the Church no longer mediates God, the individual stands alone before an impossible demand: never doubt, never rage at God, prove absolute faith. Modernity then offers substitute gods. Money becomes God in capitalism. Reason becomes God in Enlightenment liberalism. The individual becomes God in modernism. The nation wins because it gives the isolated individual a community and turns national celebration into religious certainty.

The economic origin is colder. The Industrial Revolution creates industrialists and capitalists who need markets, resources, imperialism, and above all property rights. A king can fall. A monarchy can be overturned. The nation-state is harder to overthrow, so it becomes the political form that protects bourgeois wealth across generations while also giving the state the resources and appetite for expansion.

The social origin is bewilderment. Villages empty into cities; trade, print, literacy, goods, people, and ideas move faster; standardization spreads. The result is anomie, alienation, and disenchantment: lost cultural rootedness, lost agency, and a machine-like life. Communism offers international solidarity, liberalism offers individual rights, but nationalism offers the sharper emotional form: we are one group struggling against other groups. It can even absorb its rivals. You can be nationalist-liberal or nationalist-communist. That is why it survives.

The spread of nationalism is not treated as persuasion. It is game theory. If millions of individual players are playing and one small group coordinates, everyone else must group together or lose. The moment France becomes a nation-state, Germany, Russia, Italy, and everyone else must answer in the same form. The nation-state is contagious because it changes the rules of survival.

The metric of strength changes with it. Ten strangers may lose a fight to four brothers because brothers have love, stake, obligation, and willingness to die. That is the nation-state in miniature. Size, wealth, and territory matter less than cohesion. National power is unity of will.

The French version comes through Rousseau and the Revolution. Individuals are born free, surrender some rights for security and possibility, and form a general will. Government exists to serve that will. The French Revolution makes the country into one body, and once the people think they are fighting for themselves, France can summon almost infinite soldiers. Mercenary war becomes citizen war.

The German version is born against that French conquest. Romanticism reverses the premise: individuals do not come first; culture comes first and gives birth to a people. The nation exists not to protect individual rights, but to protect, enhance, and spread the culture already carried in the people. French nationalism protects the citizen. German nationalism protects the blood-thickened culture.

Compared with monarchy, the nation-state changes the authority, the elite, and the political appetite. Monarchy rests on bureaucracy, aristocracy, and conservative alliance management. The nation-state rests on people or culture, bourgeois capital, and standardization. Because it is almost a new religion, it wants everyone to buy in. It expands outward through empire or inward through systematization.

The state simplifies the world by giving everyone the same measures and the same legal status. Then the lecture sharpens the French-German split through religion. German nationalism moves the other way. Napoleon humiliates German intellectuals by dissolving the Holy Roman Empire into French dependency. Arndt answers by making hatred of the French a religion. Fichte answers by making language the vessel of Geist, the spirit of the people. The nation is not a collection of individuals; it is the transformation that breathes life into scattered bones. For the Germans, the nation is the church.

### From Dreyfus To Eugenics

The Jewish question is the test. Jews are a nation without a state: Bible, language, culture, history, and a refusal to disappear into someone else's culture. The French answer is the Dreyfus Affair. Alfred Dreyfus is Jewish, falsely accused, and imprisoned, but liberals such as Zola defend him because the Republic exists to protect citizens. If one citizen can be sacrificed by the justice system, every citizen can be.

The German answer, in the lecture's compressed contrast, is the Holocaust. The route there passes through 1848, monarchy's attempt to contain nationalism, and a new philosophy of culture supplied by Darwin. If development happens by chance rather than divine design, elites can misread evolution as proof that some peoples evolved to be more intellectual, scientific, brave, and therefore fit to rule.

That mistake becomes skull measurement, systemic racism, and eugenics. Galton turns the gene pool into a national project. Bad genes must be removed by forced sterilization, execution, or immigration restriction. This is why the 1935 counterfactual matters. Jiang says the likely alliance, from within that racial-political world, was America, Britain, and Germany against the Soviet Union: Nordic capitalist peoples against Slavic communism. The actual wartime alliance therefore becomes a puzzle reserved for the next class.

### Empire Meets Japan

The age of imperialism follows the same racial logic. Europeans need resources, but they also think they carry a civilizing mission as the master race. Medicine weakens malaria's barrier, and Africa is carved up. Leopold's Congo becomes one of the lecture's examples of imperial atrocity. China is divided into treaty-port spheres. The Europeans expect submission because their racial model tells them the hierarchy is natural.

Japan breaks that expectation. It turns from a feudal society into an industrial nation quickly enough to defeat Russia in 1905. The rapidity is the point: it looks as if an entire people decided to change today. Jiang then brings the model down to ordinary coordination. Almost everyone reverse parks, not because law requires it, but because social cohesion has become reflex.

The Mongol invasions give the older proof. The divine-wind myth is not the real explanation. The Mongols could land; what they could not find were local allies. They could not divide and conquer. That is why Jiang says the strongest nation in East Asia is not China but Japan. Strength means cohesion, patriotism, and willingness to fight and die for the nation.

Back in Europe, nationalism tears apart the old multi-ethnic empires. Germany's unification threatens Britain's balance-of-power strategy. Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian subjects seek national independence. A Serbian nationalist assassinates the Austro-Hungarian heir, and the alliance chain opens World War I. After that war, extreme nationalism becomes fascism.

### Myth, War, Open Society

Fascism is nationalism without restraint. Mussolini's myth does not need to be factual; it needs to be stimulus, hope, faith, and courage. Marinetti makes the endpoint explicit: war is the cure, militarism and patriotism are beautiful ideas that kill. For fascism, war is good because it fuses the people into a final struggle and remolds them into more extreme nationalists.

The postwar thinkers answer by defending the individual against total myth. Arendt says totalitarian rule needs people who can no longer distinguish fact from fiction or true from false. Popper's open society asks people to be critical of taboos and use their own intelligence. He rejects Plato, Hegel, and Marx because grand historical endings are anti-democratic, anti-individual, and megalomaniacal.

That answer becomes the intellectual basis for the American Empire. World War II was the nation-state, nationalism, fascism, mercantilist trading zones, and unity of will. Pax Americana offers the rules-based order, the United Nations, human rights, Geneva conventions, global free trade, and consumerism. Instead of becoming an invincible national force, buy things and be happy.

The lecture does not let that answer rest. The postwar focus on individual rights produces identity politics, which Jiang calls a celebration of individual helplessness, and then a conservative backlash. The return of nationalism becomes a strong possibility. The final student question makes the religious frame explicit: what is the difference between nationalism and a cult? Very little, Jiang answers, except scale and ritual. Nationalism is definitely a form of religion.
