# Taboo As Control Surface
Across Jiang's civilization and Secret History lectures, taboo is not only a moral prohibition. It is a control surface: the boundary where a shared world tells people what humans may not do, what only gods may do, and what action would make return impossible.
That makes taboo more powerful than ordinary rule. A rule can be broken and punished. A taboo holds the imaginative order together. If it is honored, the world stays legible. If it is publicly broken, the violator may become monstrous, godlike, exiled, unified, or newly sovereign. The forbidden act changes the board because everyone watching has to decide what kind of world they are now inside.
Jiang's earliest useful primitive is ritual balance. In the September 2024 religious-imagination lecture, early humans are described as living inside a spirit world where [the physical world manifests a more real spiritual order](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-vanph0gftsa/transcript/#seg-0004) {source: [4:17 seg-0004](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-vanph0gftsa/transcript/#seg-0004) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VanPH0GFTsA&t=257s)) `video:predictive-history-vanph0gftsa@transcript:v1#seg-0004`} and humans must [pay tribute before and after killing animals to maintain harmony](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-vanph0gftsa/transcript/#seg-0004) {source: [4:17 seg-0004](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-vanph0gftsa/transcript/#seg-0004) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VanPH0GFTsA&t=257s)) `video:predictive-history-vanph0gftsa@transcript:v1#seg-0004`}. The point is not nostalgia. It is that action is never merely material. Killing, eating, hunting, worshipping, obeying, and remembering all occur inside an order that can be maintained or violated.
> Lens point: `lens-point:taboo-control-surface-boundary` concept: `taboo-control-surface`. Evidence: [4:17 seg-0004](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-vanph0gftsa/transcript/#seg-0004) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VanPH0GFTsA&t=257s)) `video:predictive-history-vanph0gftsa@transcript:v1#seg-0004`; [7:42 seg-0007](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0007) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=462s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0007`
Taboo is a control surface when a prohibition marks the boundary between ordinary action and world-changing violation: cross it publicly, and the social world has to reorganize around the breach.
## The River Behind The Back
The clearest formula comes in the August 2025 Secret History lecture on evil. Jiang starts with a warning: [the theories are tools, not gospel](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0001) {source: [0:00 seg-0001](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0001) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=0s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0001`}. That caution matters because the lecture moves through deliberately disturbing material: public sacrifice, group transgression, secret cohesion, and metaphysical evil.
The central image is military. Jiang describes the Chinese stratagem of fighting with a river behind the army: retreat means drowning, so soldiers either collapse or fight to the death. Then he names the social version: [the river is a taboo](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0007) {source: [7:42 seg-0007](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0007) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=462s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0007`}. A group that crosses the forbidden line in public has removed its own exit. The outside world hates it; the inside world can no longer compromise without admitting the original violation.
This is why taboo is not simply restraint. It can also become a weapon of commitment. Jiang's most combustible contemporary example should stay attributed to that lecture: he argues that public violence can function as ritual sacrifice when [visibility itself is part of the point](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0005) {source: [4:58 seg-0005](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0005) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=298s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0005`}. The important lens mechanism is narrower than any one case. If a group can make itself hated by violating what outsiders treat as sacred, then hatred becomes pressure, pressure becomes cohesion, and cohesion can become strategic energy.
> Lens point: `lens-point:taboo-river-removes-retreat` concept: `taboo-control-surface`. Evidence: [4:58 seg-0005](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0005) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=298s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0005`; [6:08 seg-0006](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0006) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=368s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0006`; [7:42 seg-0007](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0007) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=462s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0007`
Taboo becomes a river when a group crosses a forbidden line so publicly that retreat disappears; outside condemnation then helps bind the inside group into fight-to-the-death commitment.
## Sacrifice Turns Breach Into Cohesion
The same lecture does not leave sacrifice in the realm of ancient cruelty. It treats sacrifice as a social technology.
The opening examples are deliberately cross-civilizational. Jiang names Aztec sacrifice, Phoenician child sacrifice, and the Roman triumph, where captives are paraded through Rome and strangled at Jupiter's temple. His point is not that all societies are identical. It is that public killing can become more than killing: [a victory parade can hide sacrifice inside state ceremony](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0003) {source: [2:31 seg-0003](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0003) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=151s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0003`}.
He then scales the mechanism down. A school prank creates a shared secret. Theft creates fear, thrill, and complicity. The candy is not important; the breach is. When friends cross a rule together, [breaking the taboo feels empowering, liberating, and addictive](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0032) {source: [34:29 seg-0032](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0032) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=2069s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0032`; [35:32 seg-0033](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0033) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=2132s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0033`}. The group learns that it can inhabit a world ordinary people fear to enter.
That is the dark neighboring concept to the borderland engine. Scarcity can create energy when organized into openness and motion. Taboo can create energy by binding people through fear, guilt, secrecy, and shared danger. Jiang's Monkey Island thought experiment gives the constructive and terrifying version: desperate strangers invent language, myth, leadership, cohesion, and synchronicity, until [the group acts like a hive mind](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0013) {source: [14:02 seg-0013](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0013) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=842s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0013`; [15:18 seg-0014](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0014) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=918s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0014`}.
> Lens point: `lens-point:taboo-transgression-coheres` concept: `taboo-control-surface`. Evidence: [34:29 seg-0032](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0032) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=2069s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0032`; [35:32 seg-0033](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0033) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=2132s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0033`; [15:18 seg-0014](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0014) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=918s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0014`
Transgression coheres when people cross a rule together and become bound by shared secrecy, fear, thrill, guilt, or danger; the breach can make them feel more powerful than the ordinary world.
The page should keep Jiang's ambivalence sharp. He frames the darker theory as [evil, speculative, and not a recommendation](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0001) {source: [0:00 seg-0001](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0001) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=0s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0001`; [36:30 seg-0034](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0034) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=2190s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0034`; [38:57 seg-0036](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q/transcript/#seg-0036) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtlWoqWLm9Q&t=2337s)) `video:predictive-history-btlwoqwlm9q@transcript:v1#seg-0036`}. But he is trying to explain why forbidden acts can generate coordination. A moral account that says "this is wrong" may be true and still miss the mechanism by which wrong action becomes energy.
## Sin Becomes A Wall To Break
The **2025-12-11** Frankism lecture adds a religiously charged version of the same mechanism. Jiang's reading of Sabbatai Zevi and Jacob Frank is not a neutral history of Judaism, and this page should keep the attribution visible. The reusable taboo layer is narrower: a forbidden act can be reimagined as the test that proves faith is stronger than inherited law.
Zevi first turns scandal into messianic descent. Jiang says conversion to Islam is read as sacrifice, so the messianic age is no longer something believers wait for; [the believers become the messianic age](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0025) {source: [23:51 seg-0025](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0025) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kULUM_eB8KI&t=1431s)) `video:predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki@transcript:v1#seg-0025`}. That shift makes "justification by sin" more than permission. [Breaking the laws shows true faith in God, the messiah, and the self](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0026) {source: [24:49 seg-0026](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0026) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kULUM_eB8KI&t=1489s)) `video:predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki@transcript:v1#seg-0026`} because rabbinic authority no longer names the highest order.
Frank radicalizes the breach. Jiang has him treat ordinary law as the false world's control system: [by sinning, one reveals the truth of the world and empowers the self](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0048) {source: [39:23 seg-0048](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0048) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kULUM_eB8KI&t=2363s)) `video:predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki@transcript:v1#seg-0048`}. The final classroom answer makes the taboo surface explicit. [Sin is taboo, a set of invisible walls](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0125) {source: [1:23:07 seg-0125](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0125) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kULUM_eB8KI&t=4987s)) `video:predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki@transcript:v1#seg-0125`}; breaking through those walls creates guilt, reflection, pain, suffering, and knowledge. The point is not "sin for sin's sake." Jiang immediately narrows it: [sin should be used to access deeper knowledge](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0126) {source: [1:24:13 seg-0126](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki/transcript/#seg-0126) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kULUM_eB8KI&t=5053s)) `video:predictive-history-kulum-eb8ki@transcript:v1#seg-0126`}.
> Lens point: `lens-point:taboo-sin-turns-wall-into-technology` concept: `taboo-control-surface`. Sin becomes a taboo technology when a forbidden breach is used to prove faith against inherited law, break social conformity, turn guilt into discipline, and make the wall itself reveal the world it was hiding.
This belongs on the taboo page because the decisive move is the forbidden boundary. It touches [Secret Society As Coordination Technology](https://jianglens.com/docs/lens/secret-society-as-coordination-technology.txt) when Jiang describes hierarchy, secrecy, loyalty, and guilt-fueled discipline, but the organization comes after the breach. It touches [Eschatology As Script](https://jianglens.com/docs/lens/eschatology.txt) when the breach accelerates the end of the false world, but the end-time story depends on the act that makes inherited law hackable. It touches [Power As Alchemy](https://jianglens.com/docs/lens/power-as-alchemy.txt) and [How Stories Control Reality](https://jianglens.com/docs/lens/how-stories-control-reality.txt) when imagination remakes reality, but this section names the point where the remaking passes through taboo.
## The Sacred Game Can Be Hacked
The April 2025 Spanish conquest lecture gives taboo its strategic form.
Jiang does not deny disease, weapons, allies, or internal conflict. He names the standard explanation before arguing that it is incomplete. His sharper thesis is that [the ultimate weakness of the New World civilizations was their religion](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0011) {source: [11:48 seg-0011](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0011) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=708s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0011`}. That sentence is intentionally uncomfortable, and the page should not generalize it beyond the lecture's argument. The mechanism is specific: a sacred hierarchy can make power highly concentrated, and therefore highly vulnerable when the sacred center is violated.
The Popol Vuh material makes the hierarchy legible. In Jiang's reading, humans are created to serve the gods; Tohil demands sacrifice; rebellion against the gods fails; priests and enchanted lords become the ones who know the divine will. The political result is that people [submit to priest-kings as direct representatives of God](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0039) {source: [42:05 seg-0039](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0039) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=2525s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0039`; [43:05 seg-0040](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0040) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=2585s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0040`; [43:57 seg-0041](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0041) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=2637s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0041`}.
The conquest then becomes a taboo hack. In a sacred game, ordinary warfare has rules. Jiang describes Sumerian cities that fought without attacking the city because [the city was the physical manifestation of God on earth](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0043) {source: [45:57 seg-0043](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0043) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=2757s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0043`}. The equilibrium holds until someone sacks the temple, waits for divine punishment, and nothing happens. Jiang's formula is blunt: [break the ultimate taboo and you become god yourself](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0044) {source: [47:07 seg-0044](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0044) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=2827s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0044`; [48:23 seg-0045](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0045) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=2903s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0045`}.
> Lens point: `lens-point:taboo-hack-transfers-sovereignty` concept: `taboo-control-surface`. Evidence: [48:23 seg-0045](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0045) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=2903s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0045`; [52:03 seg-0048](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0048) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=3123s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0048`
A taboo hack transfers sovereignty when an outsider violates the sacred act only gods or kings were thought able to perform, suffers no divine punishment, and thereby makes the old hierarchy look spiritually empty.
This is the lens version of "kill the god, take the empire." Jiang applies it to the Spanish killing Montezuma and the Inca emperor: the Spanish do not merely remove rulers; they violate the sacred role that made the hierarchy believable. His modern analogy is nuclear taboo. Many states can fight economically or militarily, but [nuclear use is treated as the ultimate taboo because it would end the world](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0049) {source: [53:30 seg-0049](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0049) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=3210s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0049`; [54:29 seg-0050](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa/transcript/#seg-0050) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DnfGcvZrfA&t=3269s)) `video:predictive-history-dnfgcvzrfa@transcript:v1#seg-0050`}. If a player arrives without that inhibition, the existing game can collapse around the first breach.
## Scapegoats Move Guilt
The Church and French Revolution lectures show another face of the same surface: taboo does not only bind perpetrators. It can also displace guilt onto a marked body.
In the March 2025 Church and Empire lecture, the Catholic Church's power rests on maintaining orthodoxy. Jiang names its recurring strategy as [scapegoating, persecuting, and crusading](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw/transcript/#seg-0018) {source: [19:33 seg-0018](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw/transcript/#seg-0018) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3751ZjwmrBw&t=1173s)) `video:predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw@transcript:v1#seg-0018`}. His account of medieval Jewish persecution is structural: nobles use Jewish middlemen for taxes, banking, trade, and land management; peasants encounter exploitation through those intermediaries; resentment is then [channeled toward Jews rather than the nobility](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw/transcript/#seg-0019) {source: [20:47 seg-0019](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw/transcript/#seg-0019) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3751ZjwmrBw&t=1247s)) `video:predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw@transcript:v1#seg-0019`; [21:56 seg-0020](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw/transcript/#seg-0020) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3751ZjwmrBw&t=1316s)) `video:predictive-history-3751zjwmrbw@transcript:v1#seg-0020`}. Scapegoating here is not random hatred. It is a routing system for social pressure.
Crusading reroutes another pressure. In Jiang's telling, the Crusades show how sacred language can make killing feel like purification, status, penance, and heaven at once.
Robespierre gives the secular form. In the April 2025 French Revolution lecture, Jiang says sacrifice in war energizes one's own people, terrifies enemies, and most importantly [breaks taboo so there is no path back](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0017) {source: [19:27 seg-0017](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0017) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-Ch2LGDDI&t=1167s)) `video:predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi@transcript:v1#seg-0017`}. The French taboo is regicide: once king and queen are killed, Europe must respond, and France is all in. The Revolution enters a new world where [there is no more compromise and no more surrender](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0018) {source: [20:37 seg-0018](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0018) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-Ch2LGDDI&t=1237s)) `video:predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi@transcript:v1#seg-0018`; [21:44 seg-0019](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0019) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-Ch2LGDDI&t=1304s)) `video:predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi@transcript:v1#seg-0019`}.
Then the mythic script takes over. Jiang argues that even a revolution of reason still runs on inherited mythology because [mythologies are the subconscious operating system of society](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0021) {source: [23:58 seg-0021](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0021) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-Ch2LGDDI&t=1438s)) `video:predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi@transcript:v1#seg-0021`}. Robespierre becomes the one who takes blame for the community's crimes, the martyr who dies so the Revolution can live, and the paragon whose death makes others sacrifice more. Jiang's final purification formula is explicit: [become the scapegoat, take the guilt for the nation, and let the people move on](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0078) {source: [1:26:03 seg-0078](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi/transcript/#seg-0078) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef-Ch2LGDDI&t=5163s)) `video:predictive-history-ef-ch2lgddi@transcript:v1#seg-0078`}.
The **2025-12-16** modernity lecture adds the most volatile modern version, and the caveat belongs inside the mechanism. Jiang begins by warning that [it is easy to see a Jewish conspiracy everywhere, but the argument is more complicated](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-zprecjhuous/transcript/#seg-0001) {source: [0:00 seg-0001](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-zprecjhuous/transcript/#seg-0001) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPrecJHUOUs&t=0s)) `video:predictive-history-zprecjhuous@transcript:v1#seg-0001`}. His model is not that the visible group is the final hidden sovereign. It is that an empire can require visible managers and scapegoats while the deeper power keeps profit, control, and capital in shadow. In his phrasing, [empire needs scapegoats and middle managers](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-zprecjhuous/transcript/#seg-0001) {source: [0:00 seg-0001](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-zprecjhuous/transcript/#seg-0001) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPrecJHUOUs&t=0s)) `video:predictive-history-zprecjhuous@transcript:v1#seg-0001`}.
That makes the modern scapegoat different from a simple ritual victim. The marked group becomes a face for a structure that would otherwise be too abstract to hate. Jiang says transnational capital [gets the profit, hides behind the scenes, and leaves the blame on Jews](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-zprecjhuous/transcript/#seg-0002) {source: [1:15 seg-0002](https://jianglens.com/episodes/predictive-history-zprecjhuous/transcript/#seg-0002) ([video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPrecJHUOUs&t=75s)) `video:predictive-history-zprecjhuous@transcript:v1#seg-0002`}. The lens point is not an invitation to identify a secret ethnicity behind history. It is the opposite diagnostic: ask whether a conflict is making a visible intermediary absorb rage that should be aimed at the system that assigned the intermediary's role.

Scapegoating moves guilt when a community routes accumulated violence, resentment, sin, or political contradiction into a marked body whose punishment lets the larger order feel cleansed or unified.

Modern scapegoating gives hidden power a face when an empire or capital structure keeps profit and control in shadow while a visible middle-manager group absorbs blame for the system it helps administer.
## Diagnostics
Use this lens when a conflict seems to turn on an act everyone treats as more than illegal.
Ask what boundary is being protected. Is the taboo guarding a temple, child, king, body, city, ancestor, sexual line, nation, scripture, nuclear threshold, or institutional role?
Ask who is allowed to violate it. If only gods, priests, kings, soldiers, experts, or states can cross the boundary, the taboo is also mapping sovereignty.
Ask what happens after the breach. Does the violator become polluted, exiled, charismatic, feared, godlike, untouchable, or newly authoritative?
Ask whether the breach removes retreat. A public violation may be strategically chosen because it forces the group to keep going after ordinary compromise becomes impossible.
Ask whether transgression is being treated as knowledge. If the forbidden act is said to reveal the true world, prove higher faith, or turn guilt into discipline, taboo is functioning as a technology rather than only as a prohibition.
Ask where guilt is being routed. If anger at one power is discharged onto another body, the scapegoat may be preserving the system that produced the original pressure.
Ask who benefits from the visible target. If a blamed group is easier to see than the power arranging debt, trade, policy, or institutional command, the scapegoat may be functioning as a face for hidden structure rather than as the source of the structure.
Ask whether the taboo still serves life. Jiang's ritual primitive is harmony, not transgression for its own sake. A taboo can maintain an order where killing, eating, worship, sex, authority, and death remain meaningful. It can also become the lever by which power creates fear, obedience, persecution, or no-exit solidarity.
