## What Jiang Means

The nation is a fiction that becomes real because people are trained to love it. It remembers, suffers, demands, rewards, and punishes as if it were a person. That sacred person then becomes machine-like: it organizes population, factories, soldiers, welfare, education, and death into war capacity.

This is why Jiang places the nation near religion. It creates an object of loyalty large enough to ask for the person's future, body, and children.
